What is lie and loft adjustment?
Lie and loft adjustment is the process of altering a golf club's lie angle (the angle between the shaft and the ground) and loft angle (the angle of the clubface relative to the shaft) to match individual swing characteristics and body geometry.
Lie and loft adjustments are changes made to a clubhead's angles during the fitting process to align with a golfer's swing mechanics and stance. The lie angle determines how the club sits relative to the ground at address, while loft refers to the clubface's angle and affects both distance and trajectory.
Lie angle is measured in degrees of deviation from vertical. If your lie angle is too flat, the toe of the club sits higher than the heel, pushing shots to the right for right-handed golfers. Too upright drives the heel higher and pulls shots left. Loft angle directly influences launch angle and ball flight, with higher loft producing greater height and less distance, and lower loft generating flatter trajectories with more roll.
During a fitting session, an instructor or clubfitter uses launch monitors and sometimes impact tape on the clubface to read your impact patterns and assess whether adjustments are needed. They measure your dynamic measurements (posture, arm length, and swing plane) against standard specifications to determine correct lie and loft angles for your clubs. Small adjustments, even half a degree, can significantly affect consistency and accuracy.
Most modern irons and some woods allow for lie and loft adjustments using specialized tools. Golf instructors offering swing analysis often incorporate fitting assessments that include lie and loft checks as part of their teaching method.
